metalarchitecture com January 2021 METAL ARCHITECTURE 35 PRODUCT BRIEF Insulated Metal Panels In their simplest form insulated metal panels are sandwich panels with two facings of coated metal and rigid insulation between them Because IMPs can be installed in a single element they allow for faster building completion Typically IMPs can be installed at a rate of about 5000 square feet per day by a four man crew on an industrial project and 1100 square feet per day on an architectural project APPLICATIONS Cold storage CS institutional commercial and industrial ICI and architectural Panel thickness profiles and finishes vary by usage STEEL SURFACE THICKNESS Standard exterior and interior steel surface is 26 gauge with 24 gauge and 22 gauge optional for some profiles PANEL THICKNESS Typically IMPs are between 1 and 6 inches thick with roof applications using thicker panels than wall applications SIZE Typical modules are sized at 24 inches 30 inches 36 inches and 42 inches with lengths from 8 feet up to 52 feet PROFILES IMPs come in smooth panels ribbed textured and standing seam for roof systems SUBSTRATE G90 galvanized steel stainless steel aluminum zinc alloy coated steel 50 and 55 and aluminum for both interior and exterior facings FINISH Exterior surfaces are usually coated with polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF although cold storage panels usually feature silicone modified polyester SMP paint for both exterior and interior Interior panels for ICI or architectural applications is standard polyester paint CORE Foam plastic or mineral fibers Foam is usually polyisocyanurate or polyurethane foam and is injected in either liquid or froth foam between the panels Alternatively in a laminating process pre cured foam board is attached to the metal facings with structural adhesives R VALUES R values range from approximately 7 to 48 depending on the panel thickness and the core material FASTENING Concealed fastener systems on panel edges SEAMS Can be oriented either vertically or horizontally Source Metal Construction Association PHOTO COURTESY OF KINGSPAN INSULATED PANELS INC
